Session 3: Budgeting in Uncertain Times: Developing a Lean & Agile Budget

September 23 & 24, 2020
2 pm – 4 pm
Registration fee: $100

The pandemic has caused state and local government budgets to go into free-fall. The financial fallout of shutting down our economy, spending untold dollars responding to the pandemic and to protests; and hoping that relief will come from the Federal level have wreaked havoc on the current and future fiscal years. So how do we close the looming deficits and what does that potentially mean for your department?

Closing the deficit takes creativity, collaboration across the entire organization, streamlining processes and procedures to gain great efficiencies; and a stiff upper lip. Additionally, expenditure cuts mean layoffs, furloughs, pay cuts and service level reductions. So, how do we align those new (reduced) service levels with council and board priorities? This is an important question to consider as those priorities will determine resource allocation.

Join us as we explore what the economic downturn means for local agency budgets and how you can respond as part of a collaborative solution for your agency. We will use case studies, share creative and collaborative budget-cutting tips and resources, and gain skills in developing a collaboratively lean budget through exercises. We will explore ways we can “get out of our own way” in terms of collaborating with other departments and looking at the “big picture” rather than our own departments silo.

This session requires pre-work as part of your participation.
